Three of the 39 people taken hostage in an attempted jailbreak today by five prisoners in Sialkot were killed in a rescue operation that also left five inmates dead, police said.

The three judges were killed by the prisoners as they tried to shoot their way out of the situation, police said.

Police officers killed the five inmates, all jailed on kidnapping charges, who earlier today took the 39 people including 16 judicial officials hostage in an attempt to escape from prison, DIG Malik Mohammad Iqbal said.

The five had attacked the judges while they were inspecting a section of the prison housing women and took them hostage.
