Faced with a deadline to reopen its consulate in Mumbai by the year-end, Pakistan has found its answer in a plush commercial property belonging to VHP leader Ashok Singhal’s brother Vivek Singhal. This has been officially identified as the location for its Mumbai consulate.
The offer, first reported by The Indian Express, came some six months ago when the Pak High Commission, dissatisfied with the properties listed by the Maharashtra government, decided to scout on its own through real-estate brokers.
The 7000 sq ft office space in Mittal Chambers, Nariman Point, was the best they had come across after India expressed inability to hand over Jinnah House. Though Islamabad is looking at a plot near Santa Cruz to build a permanent consulate, it was the identification of a site for the interim that was becoming a problem.
The Pak High Commission is working hard with Singhal to seal the lease contract which will be for three years. ‘‘It is purely a commercial contract and they (Pak) are normal tenants ,’’ says Singhal. ‘‘I have nothing to do with VHP. I am a businessman and this is a commercial deal. But I do feel happy that there’s more interaction between the two countries. It’s good,’’ he said.
