New Delhi, Oct 6: The Government will inquire into an incident in which a staff member of the Pakistan High Commission here jumped a red light near AIIMS on Thursday, injuring a traffic police constable.

An external affairs ministry spokesman today said the commission staff memeber, who was travelling on a motorcycle, jumped the red light near AIIMS on Thursday. He was asked by a traffic constable to stop but he tried to speed away.

As a result both — the staff member and the traffic constable — fell down. They were taken to the AIIMS where the constable was treated for injuries he had received in the fall.

The commission staff member refused to undergo medical examination. He was handed over to the high commission officials after “required legal action.”

An inquiry is being conducetd into the incident.

Meanwhile, a DPA report from Islamabad said Pakistan today lodged a strongly worded diplomatic protest with India over the treatment of one of its staffers, accusing New Delhi police of beating and illegally detaining him.

A foreign ministry statement said Pakistani High Commission employee Nazakat Hussain was beaten up by five Indian policemen on Thursday for allegedly violating traffic rules while riding a motorcycle bearing a diplomatic number plate.

Hussain was kept in “illegal detention” at a police station, it said, and was released only after a high commission official signed a $100 bond for him.

The Indian deputy high commissioner was summoned to the Islamabad foreign ministry and told about the Pakistani government’s “grave concern over repeated incidents of violence and harassment against members of the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi”.

“The Government of India was also asked to instruct its agencies to desist from such illegal acts,” the statement said.
