MUMBAI, April 21: A robber, alleged belonging to the Fasse Pardhi tribe, was killed by a police patrol at Goregaon early this morning. This is the first encounter death by the police after a gap of seven months. The last man to be shot dead was Subhash Kasare, a Chhota Rajan associate, on October 19 last year.
The incident took place at around 4 am near Ramnagar building next to Patkar College on S V Road. The building is located about 50 meters away from the busy arterial road and falls under the jurisdiction of the Goregaon police station.
According to the police, two armed policemen were on a motorcycle patrolling Goregaon when they saw four men moving around in a suspicious manner. When they asked them not to flee and identify themselves, the foursome allegedly attacked the cops with stones.
The police, in retaliation, fired a round on the attackers, in which one was injured. His accomplices escaped in the dark, said the police.
The injured was rushed to Cooper Hospital, but was declared deadbefore addmission. Two policemen were also injured in the incident were released after treatment. They were identified as constable Shankar Baban Jadhav and Naik Hari Bhimaji Sanap.
A police officersaid that a knife, a chopper, a screwdriver and some hacksaw blades were recovered outside a computer centre on the third floor of Ramnagar building, indicating that the gang was trying to break into the premises. The men were in shorts and did not wear shirts, the officer disclosed. The modus operandi suggested that they could be from the Fasee Pardhi tribe.
Additional Commissioner of Police (north west region) Dr Satya Pal Singh said the identity of the deceased is being ascertained. The police are also trying to establish whether he had been involved in similar crimes prior to this, added Singh.
Earlier, the Fasse Pardi tribe allegdly killed police constables Ravindra Sawant and Anil Karar when they were patrolling in Malad on the night of November 4 last year. Though six persons have been arrested inconnection with the murder of the police, they are yet to be convicted.
Sena activist killed
A Shiv Sena activist Ajay Sathe Malvani was stabbed to death in Mulund early this morning. Malvani, an autorickshaw driver, was in a stationary vehicle near MHADA Colony, Mulund east.
when a passenger inquired the fare of another rickshaw parked alongside, he was told to pay Rs 12.50. Malvani interjected and asked the passenger to pay Rs 15.This led to an argument and in a fit of anger, the passenger whipped out a Rampuri knife and repeatedly stabbed Malvani in the abdomen. He was rushed to the Municipal Hospital at Gawanpada, but succumbed to his injuries.
