Imagine having your torn ear preserved in a ‘skin pocket’ in your abdomen. Well, that’s how Ghichulal Choudhary will live now — at least for the next few months.
On February 9, Ghichulal, a farsan businessman, was running to board a train at Kandivli station when fell on the platform. The 42-year-old’s right ear was severely damaged. In fact, a part of it came off. Ghichulal, helped by a bystander, just pocketed his ear and got himself admitted at Nanavati Hospital.
At Vile Parle Hospital, Dr Aditya Kaushik, a reconstructive surgeon, thought of a novel idea.
‘‘The final surgery should take about three to four hours and we need to ensure the ear reconstruction matches his left ear,’’ says Dr Pankaj Mittal of Nanavati Hospital.
Meanwhile, Ghichulal is waiting for life to return to normal. His family is obviously delighted. ‘‘Pehle kuch ajeeb sa lagaa (Initially, we thought it was a bit strange), admits his cousin Mohanlal Choudhary. ‘‘But now we are confident about the doctor’s expertise,’’ he adds.
