Curfew relaxed in Lucknow

LUCKNOW: Curfew was relaxed in phases in the old city areas here yesterday after the situation improved following Tuesday’s agreement between the district administration and Shia leaders on the “azadari” procession issue. According to the agreement, Shia leaders decided to call off their 13-day-old agitation on the `dispute’ relating to lifting of ban on `azadari’ (mourning) procession. The administration in a `goodwill gesture” released the prominent shia leaders.

BJP agitation against Naidu govt

VISAKHAPATNAM: The two-day BJP state executive meeting, scheduled to be held at Kakinada on July 12 & 13, would chalkout detailed agitational programmes against the TDP government in Andhra Pradesh, according to the party’s all India general secretary, M Venkaiah Naidu. The campaign to be carried out in two phases will protest against failures, ommissions and commission of the Chandrababu Naidu govt in the first phase. In the second phase, the party would embark on direct confrontation.

HC seeks Tanwar probe details

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court yesterday expressed concern over Delhi police’s failure to solve the three-year-old Tanwar murder case and sought details of investigation carried out so far in this regard. Referring to the polices submission that it has not achieved any success in solving the case, a division bench, comprising Chief Justice A P Misra and Justice Dalveer Bhandari directed the standing counsel to file an affidavit within four weeks detailing the steps taken so far by the police to solve the murder.

Six hurt in Periyakulam violence

MADURAI: Six persons, including a police constable, were injured when a 500-strong crowd allegedly indulged in violence and arson near the Periyakulam old bus stand in Theni district on Tuesday evening, protesting against an attack on a worker by some miscreants. Police said as news of the attack spread, people gathered at the bus stand started ransacking shops, and setting ablaze a few workshops. Convicted policemen to move HCHOSHIARPUR: Nine police personnel, convicted for a custodial death of a suspected militant, will soon move the Punjab and Haryana High Court against the sessions court order sentencing them to 20 years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 2,000 each, Punjab police chief P C Dogra said.
