PATNA, DEC 17: The proposed elections to the Jharkhand Area Autonomous Council (JAAC) were deferred today in view of the coming elections despite stiff opposition by the Left, official sources said. A govt-mooted proposal to this effect was endorsed by most of the participants at an all-party meeting chaired by the Chief Minister, Rabri Devi. The State Election Commission, while announcing the election schedule on December 15, had fixed January 22 for the polls. The current term of the nominated body expires in February next year.

Booklet war

BANGALORE: A booklet war has begun in Karnataka with the ruling Janata Dal and Opposition parties resorting to it to snipe at each other.

The opposition Congress published a booklet titled “Failed Promises and Unfulfilled Assurances”. The JD in return published one, which not only disputed the charges of opposition parties, but highlighted the achievements of its rule.

Arunachal BJP

ITANAGAR: The Arunachal Pradesh unit of BJP has decided to fight both the Lok Sabha seats in the imminent LS polls. A BJP release today said the decision was taken at a state executive meeting here yesterday under the chairmanship of BJP state unit chief Tamiyo Taga. The meeting constituted a 15-member election committee, headed by Taga to finalise the list of candidates.

Ballot boxes

AGARTALA: Separate pink and white ballot papers will be used for Assembly and Lok Sabha polls respectively in Tripura where the elections are being held simultaneously. Official sources here today said hectic preparations were on to complete the final voters list. The State Election Department has requested the Election Commission for additional 8000 ballot boxes for the polls, the sources said. The State election officer has asked the district magistrates of the four districts to submit a report on the existing 2367 polling polling booths.
