HANDESRA (PATIALA), Dec 17: Punjab Finance and Planning Minister Capt Kanwaljit Singh here today ruled out any patch-up in the warring Akali Dal factions.

Capt Kanwaljit Singh who was speaking to a team of press persons after formally inaugurating a-66 kv sub station of the Punjab State Electricity Board said, “Things have gone too far after the statement of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Gurcharan Singh Tohra and the resignations of five ministers from the Badal cabinet. Now there seems to be no chance of any mediation or rapproachement”.

Justifying the decision of the SGPC executive held at Chandigarh to demand the resignation of SGPC chief G.S. Tohra from presidentship of the SGPC, the finance minister said that indiscipline in any form could not be tolerated at any level, be it at the top or at the grass-root level. Tohra had violated the party discipline by not raising the issue of change of leadership of party at any party forum but had decided to go to the press with his “suggestion”.

He said no political party could survive without discipline. The people of Punjab had given a massive mandate to the Akali Dal in the last assembly elections and the party was therefore duty-bound to provide a “responsive and clean administration” to the people and “undo the injustice done to Punjab during successive Congress regimes.” Any attempt to sabotage Akali Dal unity was bound to help the Congress, he added.

Capt Kanwaljit Singh said that there was no plan whatsoever to dismiss any minister following the recent controversy kicked up by the interview given by Tohra. He said that there was no no need for these ministers to resign and instead they should have spoken to the Chief Minister before taking any such step. However, he said, these ministers had instead gone to the press even before submitting their resignations and the Chief Minister had to accept their resignations with a heavy heart.

He asserted that “there were sharp difference as even among the five ministers over the issue of resigning from ministership as some of them were not willing to quit.” Some of these ministers had unfounded fears and thought that they might be sacked.

The finance minister said that it was wrong to link the recent transfers of certain bureaucrats to the ongoing political developments. He said that the the issue of transfers was the prerogative of the government and shifting of officers was a routine matter with a view to toning up the administration.
