Home Minister Shivraj Patil today called on President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam to brief him about the latest developments in the volatile North-East, particularly the still simmering situation in Manipur.
Patil apprised the President of the Cabinet’s decision to appoint a local Manipuri Metei IAS officer as a pointsman for the state — as part of the confidence building measure.
Falguni Rajkumar, a scion of the Manipuri Royal family and a 1972 batch Karnataka cadre officer, has been selected for the job.
Rajkumar is expected to take charge in the Home Ministry from November 1, after winding up his work as Principal Secretary (Social Welfare) in Bangalore.
His appointment, officials believe, will send positive signals to the people of Manipur where nearly 20 insurgent groups are Meteis.
