ROOPNGAR, SEPT 15: Pawanjit of Sangurur won the 1500 metres freestyle gold on the opening day of the 45th Punjab Schools Swimming Championship here today. Sangrur’s Manraj and Puneet Chechi of Roopnagar claimed first positions in the 800 metres freestyle events for boys and girls respectivley.Anisha of Ludhiana stood first in 400 metres freestyle for girls under-17. Ravinder of Sangrur and Manpreet Kaur of Hoshiarpur were first in the 400 metres freestyle for boys and girls respectively.

short article insert Earlier, Roopnagar Deputy Commissioner Kulbir Singh Sidhu announced a grant of Rs 25,000 to the organising committee for the meet. More than 350 boys and 152 girls are participating in the events.

Nawanshahr win
Hosts Nawanshahr defeated Mansa in the inaugural boys volleyball match of the Punjab School Games for under-14 at the JSFH Khalsa High School in Nawanshahr today.

Atray memorial
PANCHKULA: The sixth JP Atray Memorial Cricket Tournament will be held at PCA Stadium from September 23 to 28. According to joint organising secretary Sunil Sharma, the tournament will be held on a 50-overs basis.

Indian Airlines, Punjab Cricket Club, Punjab Colts, BCC, Puncom, State Bank of Patiala and one team from Chandigarh will take part in the tournament which carries attractive cash prizes.

The Air Force Hockey Championship will be held at Sector 42 Hockey Stadium from September 16 to 23 under the aegies of 12 Wing Air Force. The matches will be played on league-cum-knockout basis.
