It sounds like a diet chart stuck on the refrigerator of a house where a model mother has aimed for the ramp again. Every grain of sugar has been measured, so is every spoonful of oil.

And the chart is pinned up on the softboards of offices of every district and taluka chief of the NCP. The dieter is Sharad Pawar (62), Maharashtra’s prodigal politician, who returns from the Capital on Monday to campaign for the Democratic Front government.

NCP general secretary Gajanan Desai has gone to the extent of writing to party leaders, district and taluka chiefs: ‘‘Doctors have advised Pawar to adhere to the specific diet, particularly when he is on tour. I am sending you the note. So ensure that the specific diet pattern is maintained during his visit to your area.’’

The doctor is Sheetal Mhamunkar of KEM Hospital’s Department of Endocrinology. Of late, the old political warhorse — he has served as CM and then went up North to serve as Defence minister — has been taking it easy. But he has become more health-conscious after a brief illness last year.
