PANAJI, SEPT 28: The pollsters are predicting a sweep for the National Democratic Alliance led by BJP, but Nationalist Congress Party leader Sharad Pawar thinks differently.

On a brief holiday in Goa, Pawar felt that the ongoing elections to the Lok Sabha will lead to a hung Assembly: “The Indian National Congress Party with 150 plus seats would emerge as the single largest party.” He however noted that the non-BJP and non-Congress parties would determine the next Government.

Strongly criticising opinion and exit polls, Pawar felt they were part of election propaganda. “In the last elections the opinion polls said I would get 13 seats, but I got 37,” he told media-persons.

Pawar who built his election campaign entirely against Sonia Gandhi’s prime ministerial ambitions reiterated his stand. His NCP, he said, was open to aligning with the Congress minus Sonia Gandhi and the non-BJP parties.

Pawar however felt that NCP which is contesting 160 LS seats would bag at least 48 of them. According to him the NCP would gain in Maharashtra, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya: “We will emerge as a national party after the polls.”

The Maratha strongman insisted that the Shiv-Sena-BJP combine is heading for a rout in Maharashtra. “The NCP-RPI and Janata Dal combine will form the Government,” he said.

According to Pawar the NCP is still finding its wings and will grow and mature in the years to come.
