Giving an activist interpretation to the model code of conduct, the Election Commission today took action against a minister of Uttar Pradesh in connection with the J&K polls.
This follows reports that Jaiveer Singh, who is forest minister in the Mayawati Government, took BSP supremo Kanshi Ram to J&K in a govt aircraft in the course of election campaign in the state.
After verifying the reports, the EC shot off a letter to the UP govt directing it to recover the cost of the entire flight from Jaiveer Singh’s pocket for violating the model code of conduct which forbids a minister from using government machinery for electioneering.
Jaiveer Singh evidently presumed that the model code does not apply to him because the election is another state. This is perhaps the first occasion when the model code is being invoked in an Assembly election against a minister who has nothing to do with the state concerned.
