WASHINGTON, FEB 22: Chanting “no more war;” several hundred people protested in front of the White House yesterday against US military involvement in Iraq.

“One, two, three, four: we don’t want your racist war;” the demonstrators said during the peaceful protest which drew about 300 people. Organizers vowed that if the United States took military action against Iraq in the next few days, a demonstration next Saturday in New York city would draw “tens of thousands” of protesters.

Brian Becker of the International Action Center said that a war with Iraq would take place at the behest of Wall Street bankers.

He said it would be “a war dripping with illegality, not to mention immorality — a war of genocide.”

The protest was organised by a coalition of Leftist and Arab-American groups. Demonstrators injected a heavy dose of humour into the protest, holding up signs that poked fun at the sex scandal engulfing President Bill Clinton. “Save your conquests for White House aides, Bill,” read onesign, referring to former White House intern Monica Lewinsky, with whom Clinton allegedly had an affair.

Another bore a photo of Lewinsky, saying “Oh silly Billy, make love, not war.”
