This is 22-year-old Bhakti Doshi’s debut exhibition of oil paintings. And like many other artists, she too, looks towards Rajasthan to add colour and vibrancy to her canvases. She says India fascinates her endlessly with its rich inheritance of art, music and culture. And during her holidays to Rajasthan she was inspired into capturing it on canvas as the state’s colourful history, proud men, mysterious women and romantic deserts intrigued her. After graduating in textile design from Sophia Polytechnic, Bhakti studied fashion design from London College of Fashion. Her interest in fine arts started when she picked up the camera. "After a short stint with photography, I was inspired to do black and white sketches of faces and figures which led to oil paintings," says Bhakti. Whether she will continue painting or not depends on the response she gets for her first exhibition, says she. And though she has no formal training in fine arts, she is not very sure whether she wants to go back to school. Currently she is a freelance textile and fashion designer — Eternia being one of the outlets which has carried her designs. Bhakti also plays the sitar.

At Taj Art Gallery, Taj Mahal Hotel. From July 15 to July 21, 1997. Time: 10.00 pm to 8.00 pm
