NEW DELHI, December 8: The Delhi Development Authority plans to build a desi Disneyland in the sub-city of Dwarka. But no one seems to know when the plan will materialise. Official and even non-official members of the DDA have been to Essel World in Mumbai and the Kishkinta amusement park in Chennai twice already. But nothing concrete has come out of these visits.

Municipal councillor Devagagya Bhargava says that Appu Ghar does not meet international standards. “We need something on the pattern of Disneyland, something that visitors from abroad will appreciate.” DDA sources

say that some officials were even contemplating going all the way to Disneyland to pick up some tips, but ultimately settled for Essel World and Kishkinta.

According to Bhargava, work on the project will begin only when a new body is elected. The recent Assembly elections in Delhi had its effect on the amusement park project. Ramvir Singh Bidhuri was removed from the Delhi Assembly by the people of Badarpur and the political parties are yet to nominate new members to the DDA team. “Though members are elected by the parties, it is done generally by consensus. But until a new team takes over, the proposal cannot be finalised,” Bhargava adds.

DDA officials say that some proposals have been received, but there is nothing concrete on the amusement park project yet. “And anyway, our top priority is to see that water and electricity are provided to the houses that have already been constructed by us in Dwarka,” he says.

Bidhuri refused to comment on the proposal on the plea that since he was no longer a non-official member of the DDA it would not be proper for him to comment on the project. “And anyway, I have even forgotten when we went to Mumbai and Chennai,” he adds.

The amusement park, according to a DDA official, will take its own time, but because they had to take the MLAs and the municipal councillors on tour, they decided to make the visit to the two amusement parks the tour plan. “The proposal was, in fact, made last year. Let us see when the amusement park finally comes up,” he says.
