Ahead of the crucial boundary talks between the Special Representatives (SR) of both countries this month, plans are on for a meeting between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Chinese President Hu Jintao on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly at New York.

The request for a meeting has come from the Chinese side and New Delhi is working out the schedule, said sources. Singh is expected be in New York by September 13.

With the SRs—National Security Advisor M K Narayanan and Chinese Vice-Minister Dai Bingguo—slated to meet at Beijing on September 26-27, Singh and Jintao are expected to discuss the future course of negotiations. They may also discuss UN reforms and touch upon the expansion of the UN Security Council—Beijing has opposed the G-4 resolution.

Efforts are also on for an India-Russia-China meeting where the two leaders are expected to meet again. The foreign ministers of the three countries, who had met last in Vladivostok, had indicated that the three heads of government will meet on the margins of the UNGA.

The bilateral meeting comes just a few weeks before the SRs kickstart the second phase of talks on the complex settlement process.
