Senior Congress leader and party spokesman S. Jaipal Reddy today came down heavily on Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee for attending the swearing-in ceremony of Gujarat’s Narendra Modi Government.

‘‘The Prime Minister has lowered the image of the office by attending the swearing-in ceremony of a Chief Minister. This is a bad precedent. And it

shows how desperate the BJP is for electoral success,’’ Reddy told mediapersons here.

Reacting to the BJP’s resolve to play the Hindutva card to replicate it’s Gujarat experience in other states going to poll next year, the Congress spokesman said: ‘‘What happened in Gujarat can’t be replicated.’’

Reddy also criticised the Sangh Parivar for expanding its list of divisive issues following which one of it’s affiliates tried to perform puja at the Qutub Minar.

‘‘This shows their irresponsibile attitude and blind fanaticism,’’ he said. Questioning the silence maintained by NDA allies Chandrababu

Naidu, Naveen Patnaik and others on the so-called agenda of the alliance, he said: ‘‘They are leaders without ideological convictions, and are guided by compulsions of regional politics”.
