In a quick response to the recommendation of the Synergy on Energy Panel to go for an integrated energy policy, the government on Wednesday set up an energy coordination committee chaired by PM Manmohan Singh.

The committee will enable a systemic approach for policy formulation in the area of energy planning and security.

The committee which comprises union ministers of finance, petroleum and natural gas minister, power, coal and non-conventional energy sources, deputy chairman of the Planning Commission, member (energy) Planning Commission, chairman of the economic advisory council to the PM, national security advisor, cabinet secretary and principle secretary to the PM who will be the convenor of the committee.

The panel will identify key areas for energy policy initiatives so that overall objective of economic development of energy security and sufficiency are met. It will monitor vulnerabilities impinging on energy security aspects and outline follow up action that was needed to be taken for implementing identified policy initiatives as also periodically monitor of the policy decisions.

The committee will be serviced by the PMO and the energy division of the Planning Commission will facilitate any policy analysis required.
