Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said the police and criminal justice system needs to be accountable and responsive to the people’s needs.
He was addressing the 9th Inter-State Council meeting, whose main agenda was good governance and disaster management.
Singh said the common man usually interacted with the government through the police, law enforcement or the state’s delivery mechanism. It was here, he said, that the common man encounters the government’s ‘‘brutal face’’.
Stressing on the need for good governance, the Prime Minister said only this could ensure the interface between the government and the people is pleasant.
Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil said after the meeting that many states want a new commission to look into the Centre-states relationship keeping in mind the changed times. He said the UPA Government was keen to set up a new panel along the lines of the Sarkaria Commission but was proceeding with great caution keeping in mind the seriousness of the matter.
Earlier, Patil had told the council that states would respond to suggestions made under the model good governance plan chalked out by the Standing Committee of the Interstate Council.
