PUNE, Oct 16: On May 15, 1998, the State Government sanctioned a strength of 98 additional police personnel to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to maintain law and order during demolitions undertaken by the anti-encroachment department. Till date, the PMC has to make do with only 30 police personnel despite paying the salary amount to the State Government!

The 98 police personnel would include one Assistant Commissioner of Police, 8 PSI, 2 women PSI, 10 police havaldar, 7 women police havaldar, 30 constables and 21 women constables among others. According to anti-encroachment department chief Gautam Wagchaure, the PMC has to pay Rs 58.72 lakh to the State Government. While city engineer Madhav Harihar said that payment had been made, the State Government had still to deploy the remaining 68 police personnel for the civic body.
