Dec 30: The Mumbai police have struck upon a novel concept to promote security consciousness among members of the public by bringing out a special card on the eve of new year. The resolve is: Blow the whistle on frauds and enjoy the new year.
The joint commissioner (law & order) Dr P S Pasricha said that about 50,000 such cards will be distributed among various police stations, senior officers, co-operative housing societies, colleges, mohalla committees to make the public aware and to prevent economic offences.
The idea is that people should not get cheated of their hard-earned money by unscrupulous elements. “This will also help to foster long-term relationship with the public,” added Dr Pasricha.
The new year card assumes significance in the light of the fact that atleast five major financial scams were reported during 1996. The card highlights several points which warn investors against `Double Your Money Scheme’. It also points out the plight of gulf job seekers, often cheated by unauthorised agents and sub-agents who give attractive and misleading advertisements in newspapers.
Also included in the card are precautions for safe banking and how to avoid bouncing of cheques.
Instructions are also given to members of public about the co-operative housing societies and how to prevent cheating at the time of purchasing flats.
The police are confident that the preventive measures would go a long way in bringing down the rate of economic offences in the society.
