The Imam of Deoband has urged Muslims across India not to slaughter cows. But in Godhra, the police wreaked havoc on poor farmers in Vejalpur and Polan Bazar and snatched away their cattle, in an apparent bid to check their slaughter during the Eid-Ul-Zuha celebrations.
The farmers have, on their part, said the cattle were meant for farming, and not for slaughter.
“They took my two cows. They were for farming, not sacrifice. In any case, we have been asked by the mosque not to slaughter cows,” said Anwar Haji Bakhtar, a farmer at the Polan Bazaar Kabarstan.
Police officers in Godhra said that over the last one week, they have snatched around 250 cows from the ‘D’ squad totalling a loss of Rs 30 lakh, if the recent price of the cattle is considered.
They added that their act was part of the routine exercise to check on cow slaughter. “We had set up six additional police posts in the Polan Bazar area to check on cow slaughter,” said Sub- Inspector H N Parmar, who is leading the drive against cow slaughter in the area.
