Bahujan Samaj Party president Mayawati today demanded the imposition of President’s Rule in Uttar Pradesh, citing widespread rigging by the ruling party in the recent by-elections.

Mayawati warned that if the Centre failed to dismiss the Mulayam Singh government then, together with the Samajwadi Party, the Congress too would receive a befitting reply from the people. She alleged that the BSP would have won in all the 11 seats if the Samajwadi Party had not rigged the bypolls.

Talking to newspersons here, Mayawati said this blatant use of money and muscle-power showed that Mulayam was aware of his shifting support-base. ‘‘The party in power uses such tactics only when its leader is unsure of winning the elections through fair means,’’ she said. The violence unleashed by the ruling party has claimed the lives of several BSP workers, she added.

Describing the use of unfair means in the polls as a ‘‘murder of democracy’’, Mayawati said she was confident that the SP would be wiped out in the next Assembly elections.
