In the wake of the massacre of non-Assamese labourers by the ULFA in Assam, which included 61 from Bihar, state Chief Minister Nitish Kumar wrote to PM Manmohan Singh on January 10 requesting him to intervene and to raise the relief being extended to the affected by contributing from the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund.

“I solicit your kind intervention to take necessary steps to instill a sense of security and confidence in all sections of the society by bringing the situation under control in Assam and also by arranging adequate relief and rehabilitation to the affected people,” he said in his letter.

Pointing out that the Bihar government had organised monetary compensation to the families of the victims in addition to relief from the Assam government, the CM wrote, “I would request you also to kindly extend maximum possible assistance to the affected families from the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund or from any other source as you deem fit.”

He added, “I would like to inform you that all the precautionary steps have been taken to prevent any untoward incident in reaction to the happenings in Assam. Special measures have been taken to guard the trains coming from Assam and those going to Assam. We have left no stone unturned to keep situation under control. Besides taking preventive steps, we have also appealed to the people to keep calm in this hour of crisis.”
