With a record production expected this year, potato-growers of the state are in for a problem of plenty. Already an early crop, which has arrived in the wholesale mandis, has brought down the price of potato to Rs 1-2 per kg.
By the first week of February, when the major crop usually hits the markets, the prices are likely to nosedive to 50 paise per kg, which is less than the cost of production.
The Mayawati government, which is still grappling with the problems of sugarcane farmers, has not yet taken steps to prevent distress sale by farmers.
Adding to the farmers’ woes, cold storage owners have decided to hike their rates. ‘‘The Power Corporation has raised tariff by 5 per cent and the palledari rate has doubled. We have no option but to raise storage charges,’’ Cold Storage Association president Mahendra Swaroop said.
