SOLAPUR, March 26: Around 300 powerloom owners today took out a morcha through the city in protest against the four per cent sales tax and one per cent turnover tax slapped on powerloom products in the recent State budget.

The agitators, sporting black badges presented a memorandum to District Collector Madhav Sangale, asking the government to immediately withdraw the taxes. The morcha was lead by Solapur Yantramad Dharak Sangh general secretary Damodar Nalla.

The powerloom owners lamented that the Solapur bedsheet industry had been facing a slack for the past few years and around 10,000 powerlooms, out of the total 25,000, were idle. They were forced to sell the produce at a lower cost, they added.

The powerloom owners organisation already has threatened to launch an indefinite strike from April 1.
