NEW DELHI, DEC 1: Pramod Tiwari threw the chained ball to 67.26 metres to improve his own national mark of 66.92 metres set in Chennai this August. On Monday, in the first Raja Bhalendra Singh South Asian Federation athletic meet, the Lankans showed that there is still more coming in from the assembly line, as Amarawansa Ramanayake won both the 100 metres and the 200 metres. The 100 metres win may have had some sheen taken off as the injured Amit Khanna, India’s national champion with 10.54s and Rajeev Balakrishnan, who has to his credit 10.34s clocked in US College meet, were not around. But as far as the 200m goes he beat one of India’s best Paramjit Singh, who has had some good results.
In the women’s section, PT Usha, now in her 17th year of international competition and Rachita Mistry clashed in 200m. Usha was given the nod in a photofinish, even as Adille Sumariwala, who has been training Rachita, felt that his ward had finished ahead. The judges differed and so it stayed with both being credited with 23.89s.
Rosa Kutty had a good showing in the 800 metres with 2:00.94 and the 400 metres in 53.13s. In the two-lapper, she beat her arch-rival Jyotirmoyee Sikdar, who seemed to be srtuggling in the last 200m.
Bahadur Prasad had an easy win in 1,500m with a time of 3:54.44 — almost 25 seconds slower than his best.
The stadium had to be readied with the help of a vacuum cleaner. The SAI clearly worked all night to make up for all the damage it had done by letting out the stadium for non-sports purposes.
