17 injured in gas explosion in Romania

After an apparent gas leak in the nearby office,the two blasts in northwestern Romania injured 17 people.

Authorities say 17 people have been injured in two blasts at a disco in northwestern Romania after an apparent gas leak in a nearby office.

The first blast occurred in the early today,injuring seven at the basement disco in the city of Sighetu Marmatiei.

Local government official Sandu Pocol says there was another explosion hours later as investigators began a probe into the first blast. He says a further ten were injured,

including firefighters and two police officers.

Pocol says the blasts appeared to have been caused by a gas leak in an office above the disco.

Authorities transported some of the more seriously injured to Bucharest. Romania’s police chief Liviu Popa headed today to the city to help the investigation.
