Benazir assassination: UN commission meets Kayani

Chief of the UN Commission probing the assassination of Benazir Bhutto,Heraldo Munoz,met Pakistan Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani to discuss the various aspects of the investigations.

Chief of the UN Commission probing the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto,Heraldo Munoz,met Pakistan Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani to discuss the various aspects of the investigations.

Sources privy to the meeting said Munoz discussed the progress made in the probe with Kayani.

This was the second high-profile meeting of the commission in as many days.

On Wednesday,the members of the commission had met the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) Director General Lt.Gen. Ahmed Shuja Pasha.

According to insiders,President Asif Ali Zardari has also allowed the UN team to record the statement of Kayani and other senior military officers.

The military officers had earlier expressed some reservations,but they agreed to meet the team after their concerns were addressed.The terms of reference of the UN Commission clearly states that the commission can interview anyone,including top military and political leaders.

The commission,which began its work on July 1,was mandated to submit its report identifying facts and circumstances concerning Bhutto’s tragic death on December 27,2007 to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon by December,31,2009.

However,last month,the commission had sought an extension on grounds that its work has been affected by the chaos in Pakistan. This request has been accepted and it is now expected to submit its report in March.
