After the Indian batting collapsed to lose six wickets for 45 runs in the first session of play, the pacemen, led by rookie Umesh Yadav pulled the match back for the visitors after reducing Australia to 179 for eight in their second essay. The trio of Yadav,Ishant Sharma and Zaheer Khan combined to scalp seven of the eight wickets to fall, bowling with pace and control. Yadav,in the company of Ishant, worked up considerable pace off the wicket all day, hitting speeds in excess of 150 kmph to trouble the batsmen. Virender Sehwag, during his post-match interaction, labeled the attack the best that he has been a part of,in a decade-long career. The opener spoke of how captain MS Dhoni highlighted the importance of keeping the ball in challenging areas during the change-over. The captain said (during the innings break) that we needed to go out there and give our best. He said this is the moment when we expect bowlers to bowl in right areas because the wicket is doing something. The bowlers delivered. Especially in the first spell,Umesh Yadav and Ishant (Sharma) and Zak (Zaheer Khan),they bowled beautifully. We bowled very well and this is the best Indian bowling attack I have ever played with, said the opener. He also had words of praise for Yadav, who has already notched seven wickets in the match. He bowls in right areas in the high 140s and offers a good challenge to batters, he said, speaking of the Vidarbha lad.
