‘Delay in 2010 CWG projects will lead to corruption’

GANSF Chief Vijay Kumar Malhotra claimed the Government's contention regarding the completion of project in time does not hold water.

General Association of National Sports Federations (GANSF) rubbished Government claim that all Commonwealth Games projects were running on schedule and warned that if quick remedial action was not taken it may lead to “massive corruption”.

GANSF Chief Vijay Kumar Malhotra claimed the Government’s contention regarding the completion of project in time does not hold water if one goes by the situation on the ground.

Malhotra, who is a senior vice-president of Indian Olympic Association (IOA),said with less than 500 days left for the mega event only 30 to 40 per cent of the projects have been completed and most of the projects were getting inordinately delayed.

“If delay persists then after some time under the garb of National prestige and honour, the projects may be speeded up as the deadline for hosting the Games approaches and in the process “more money” may be invested to the benefit of the builders and others,” said Malhotra.

He alleged that already DDA has already caved in to pressure from the builders’ cartel and doled out Rs 100 crore to complete the Games village.

“This is the first installment of the shapes of things to come. The vested interests are having a gala time at the government expense. The more delay will mean more corruption,” he said adding that “inability of the government to sell the Games flats in advance shows that ‘Aam Adami’ (Common Man) will have to bear the brunt of the costs of the Games”.

There are so many committees that no body knows who is doing what, there are at least 10 to 15 committees overlapping each other’s works and function thus leading to total chaos and confusion.

“In the corridors of power there are pulls and pushes to capture big posts and position in the Games set up,everybody out there wants power without responsibility and this is not good news,” Malhotra added.

He said these international Games have been allotted to the IOA and they will be answerable if anything goes wrong. “The Government has important role to play as far as building of infrastructure is concerned but if the projects are marred in scandals and corruption, the IOA too will have to bear the responsibility,” he cautioned.
