A senior Israeli military officer says thousands of troops in the north are on alert following the fall of the Lebanese government.
Authorities are concerned that the political turmoil in Lebanon will spill over into renewed violence on the Lebanese-Israel border.
The officer spoke today on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the press.
The Hezbollah militant group and its allies pulled out of the Lebanese government yesterday, causing it to collapse.
They bolted over the government’s insistence on cooperating with a UN tribunal investigating the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Harir.
Hezbollah expects the tribunal to indict some of its members.
