Asian silver medallist Jai Bhagwan crashed out of the World Boxing Championships after losing his light weight (60kg) pre-quarterfinal bout to German Eugen Burhard in Milan,Italy on Monday.
Jai trailed by three points in the opening round and the gap widened as the bout progressed and the Indian lost 3-9.
“I am very disappointed. This loss is a shocking one for me because I tried everything. I didn’t expect it to be so low-scoring. It’s heartbreaking but there is always a next time,” Jai said from Milan.
National coach Gurbax Singh Sandhu said the German’s tight defence proved hard to break. “Burhard had a shell guard and though Jai tried breaking it with upper-cuts,he just couldn’t score,” he said.
After trailing 2-5 in the opener,Jai reduced the gap to 3-5 by the end of the second round but he couldn’t notch any point in the final three minutes against Burhard’s four. Another Indian Manpreet Singh also lost his heavy weight (91kg) opener against European champion Oleksander Usyk of Ukrainian to crash out of the championships late last night. Manpreet, who got a bye in the first round, went down 2-16 in the lop-sided bout in which Usyk bobbed and ducked his way to victory.
