Launching a counterattack

On both counts,Hussey decided to counterattack his way out of trouble.

Like any true-blue Western Australian batsman brought up on the bouncy wickets at Perth, one shot that gets Michael Hussey going is the pull shot. On Wednesday when the experienced left-hander came out to bat,he had to not only pull his team out of a serious mess,he was also playing to save his career.

On both counts,Hussey decided to counterattack his way out of trouble. The Indian bowlers, especially Umesh Yadav, had found the perfect length on the seaming wicket, and having sent back four Australians already, they were going in for the kill. And Umesh got it right on target in his first over to Hussey, who survived a genuine outside edge. The young pacer then pitched it short to Hussey, who unleashed a pull so hard that it bisected the gap between backward square-leg and a squarish fine-leg.

Hussey suddenly had 13 runs off 7 balls and had become the first Australian to reach double-figures in the second innings. The intent was evident in every stride Hussey took at the crease thereafter.
