Despite Indias nine-wicket pummelling on Tuesday,MS Dhoni reiterated that the youngsters will continue to be given a long rope to prove themselves. Hence, the captain assured during the post-match press conference that the learning curve has kept the team upbeat the heavy defeat notwithstanding. Excerpts.
On the Hambantota wicket.
Initially, the wicket was slightly on the slower side. Once Virat (Kohli) got out,we lost a couple of more wickets (both played on) very quickly before the batsmen could assess the wicket. It was too much for the likes of Irfan and Ashwin to come in and take us out of trouble.
On whether shot selection or good bowling caused the loss.
I dont think that the shots were really rash. People were looking for singles. If you see Rohits ball, the shot was on. But,he got an inside edge on to the stumps. Had it missed,it could have been his lucky day.
On what went wrong.
Bowling was not up to the mark, fielding too,yes we need to improve. But with regards to the bowling,if you make 130-odd runs the opposition plays freely.
On whether he will give the bench a chance.
Thats a difficult choice that as a captain, you have to make. I personally believe that we should give a newcomer a few games before we change him, because it gives him a chance to prove himself. Likewise,a player wont be shuffled out if he doesnt perform in a particular game. Its a good way to go ahead because it gives you a cushion of three to four games. If the team wins, that cushion grows by a couple of games.
On reasons for the loss.
It is difficult to blame complacency or lack of application. This is a good learning curve and slowly and gradually you will see all the youngsters learning, especially about the importance of the middle overs because that is where most of the cricket is played.
On the breezy conditions and if it affected the outcome.
I think they adjusted well, although today the performance wasnt so good. We usually face these conditions in Wellington. Given the amount of time we spent out there,we adjusted pretty well.
