NRI charged with raping woman in Canadian club

An Indian-origin man has been charged with drugging and sexually assaulting a woman at a nightclub in Toronto.

An Indian-origin man has been charged with drugging and sexually assaulting a woman at a nightclub on the outskirts of this Canadian city.

Jagdeep Chahal,32,surrendered to police on Saturday after the woman,who is in her 40s,lodged a complaint alleging that she was sexually assaulted in the bathroom of the club after a date rape drug was slipped into her drink on January 22,the media in Toronto reported.

Police credited the release of a surveillance video with helping identify Chahal,a resident of Brampton,who is allegedly responsible for the assault,the ‘Toronto Star’ reported.

The video showed him entering the club with another man. “We got phone calls to identify these people. The individual has brought himself forward and turned himself in with counsel,” Det. Const. Mike Norman of the Sex Crimes Unit was quoted as saying.

The accused was interrupted by a club-goer and fled sometime between midnight and 12:30 a.m. local time,another newspaper ‘Toronto Sun’ said on its online edition.

Chahal — charged with sexual assault and administering a noxious thing — was not known to police before this incident,Norman said.

The other man in the video released to the media on Friday was identified,but not charged,he added.
