Oz police recuits first turban-wearing Sikh

The new recruit will wear a newly designed police turban.

Police in Australia’s Victoria state on Monday inducted its first officer from the Sikh community who will wear a newly designed police turban,a media report said on Monday.

The first officer Constable Amitoj Singh who graduated from the Police Academy would wear a newly designed police-issue turban,featuring the service’s checker board pattern.

Singh has been assigned suburb of Endeavour Hills from next week. On his induction,Singh was quoted as saying that the community was in the Sikh blood.

“The founders of Sikh people,they have been standing up for the rights of the community all the time,” he was quoted as saying by an ABC report.

“Back in India right now,the Sikh regiment is the most prestigious and significant part of Indian army,” he said adding,”So this is hereditary. Every Sikh person would like to serve the community if given the opportunity.”
