‘Personal attacks bringing disrepute to S Africa’

Raging row has erupted when the leader of the DA was quoted in the press as saying,‘Zuma is a self-confessed womanizer'.

Asking South African politicians to stop mud slinging, country’s human rights body said, such personal attacks is bringing disrepute to the nation after a row in which the new President Jacob Zuma was called a “womaniser”.

Fearing an outbreak of racial divisions in the country, the Human Rights Commission said if the parties don’t stop their vile mud-slinging,then it would hold an inquiry.

It asked the ruling ANC and the main Democratic Alliance opposition to stop this political name-calling.

“The tone of the debate,if you look at it,both sides have not conducted themselves well. The language of the ANC itself needs to be examined,” Vincent Moaga, media spokesperson of the HRC said in an interview on Thursday.

The HRC concern follows a raging row that has erupted after the leader of the DA,Helen Zille, was quoted in the press as saying,“Zuma is a self-confessed womaniser with deeply sexist views, who put all his wives at risk by having unprotected sex with an HIV-positive woman.”

The ruling ANC responded with venom when they came out to defend President Jacob Zuma. The row has also been inflamed by the failure of Zille to appoint any women to her 10-member cabinet in the Western Cape Province.

An ANC leader,Floyd Shivambu claimed that Zille had surrounded herself with an all-male cabinet as she treated them as her “boy-friends”.

The ANC secretary general,Gwede Mantashe had accused Zille of being a “racist” and that the ruling ANC would embark on programmes to counter Zille.

“By appointing an all male Cabinet she is trying to say that there are no other women who are worthy of high office, except herself,” Mantashe said.

“Zille has appointed an all-male Cabinet of useless people, majority of whom are her boyfriends and concubines so that she can continue to sleep around with them (sic),yet she claims to have the moral authority to question our President,” Shivambu said.

He said they would embark on militant action to “teach Zille a lesson”.

The ruling ANC’s former soldiers organisation,MK Military Veteran’s Association, also warned Zille that she would not last long in the Western Cape.

“Should Helen Zille not refrain from this anti-African and racist behaviour,we are not going to hesitate, but craft and launch a political programme aimed at rendering the Western Cape ungovernable,” said Kebby Maphatsoe, spokesperson for the association.

The tit for tat exchanges has also aroused members of the public with radio stations being inundated with SMSs and calls condemning Zille for denigrating “our president”.

“The country does not need this right now. If this does not stop then we will be forced to call a meeting of all parties involved to ask them to tone down their rhetoric,” said the HRC’s Vincent Moega.
