Quest Scholars: Response by Kanika Parwal to question for October 7-13

Should convicted lawmakers be allowed to contest elections?

“You must be the change you wish to see in this world”

These words were rightly spoken by Mahatma Gandhi, and have an everlasting significance. On 2nd October 2013,on occasion of Gandhi Jayanti the people of India saw the ideals of Gandhi being truly kept up. We were reminded of how the quote: “democracy is the government of the people,by the people and for the people” still holds true.

Our country is at its peak of everything: population; corruption; inflation; and rapes. It is the job of the government to improve the political, economical and social scenarios in the country and not waste time in propagating “nonsensical” bills like the ordinance bill which sought to protect the convicted lawmakers and make them eligible to contest elections. The country needs leaders who can help it break the shackles of economical crisis, injustice, etc. and not one who have themselves been filling their own pockets from national treasuries! Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo and former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad Yadav along with 44 other ministers was recently sentenced to jail for 5 years because of the Rs 950 crore fodder scam they were involved in,which had surfaced 17 years ago.

This ordinance initiated by the government against the Supreme Court ruling that had said that convicted lawmakers would face immediate disqualification, sought to protect such politicians.

India needs the vision of the young, one which is inspiring and motivating and not that of greedy politicians. Its a relief to know that the ordinance bill was withdrawn under the extreme opposition by public topped by criticism thrown by Rahul Gandhi along with the support of several other ministers. It is the duty of the one with power to ensure justice to ones without power. We need to not only learn to stand up against unfair practices but also exercise our lessons. We all our aware of what is wrong, but none of us are making any attempt to make it right. So lets stop waiting for others to make the change and be the change we want to see!
