Tournament top seeds Saina Nehwal and Chetan Anand realised their dream of a Grand Prix title at home, winning the womens and mens finals respectively at the Syed Modi International GP badminton on Sunday.
While Nehwal beat Aditi Mutatkar in straight games 21-17 21-13 the world No.8 was erratic in the first game.
On quite a few occasions, she attempted in vain a backhand return with a loop and there was inconsistency in her returns as well.
However, she cut down on her errors in the next game, looking in control of the proceedings and easily rounding off the win.
Winning a Grand Prix at home is something different. It was at the back of my mind that I was playing in front of home crowd so the expectations would be very high. Plus my coaches and my father were watching me play,so this meant a lot to me, Nehwal said.
In the mens final,Chetan outplayed fifth-seeded Dyonisius Hayom Rumbaka of Indonesia 21-17 19-21 21-16. Anand looked a little anxious in the decider, but regained his composure to pocket the game and the match.
The hosts collected another trophy at the event with second seeds Aparna Balan and Arun Vishnu beating compatriots and third seeds Shruti Kurian and Tarun Kona 21-14 17-21 21-19 in mixed doubles.
The mens doubles title went to the Indonesian pair of Adnan Fauzi Tri Kusumawardana, who beat the top-seeded Indian duo of Akshay Dewalkar and Jisnhu Sanyal 27-25 23-25 21-15. In womens doubles,Misaki Matustomo and Akaya Takahashi of Japan defeated Nadya Melati and Devi Tika Permatasari of Indonesia 21-14 15-21 21-15 to lift the trophy.
