Asian champion Suranjoy Singh defeated Olympic bronze medallist Vincenzo Picardi in the 51kg quarter-finals to assure himself of a medal in the season-ending President’s Cup.

Representing the Asia One team, the Indian won 6-4 and will now take on Mexico’s Braulio Avila, who is competing for Americas Two team,in the semi-final on Thursday.

“I didn’t even know he was an Olympic medallist. I just focussed on keeping my cool and that worked,” the 22-year-old said.

Suranjoy led 4-1 at the end of the first three minutes, and though he adopted a guarded approach in the second round, the Indian denied his rival any chance of a return.
