We shouldn’t support Pak duplicity: US lawmaker

An influential US lawmaker has said that the America should no more tolerate the 'duplicity' of the government at Islamabad.

Even as the new Barack Obama administration is mulling a new Afghan-Pakistan policy,an influential US lawmaker has said that the America should no more tolerate the ‘duplicity’ of the government at Islamabad.

Congressman George Miller charged the previous George Bush administration of ignoring the “dual roles” played by the Pakistani military and intelligence apparatus in fighting Taliban led insurgency in the region.

“In Pakistan,we can no longer suffer the duplicity of that government in sort of fighting and not fighting and supporting and not supporting and the dual roles that many in the military and the intelligence service have played in the past — unfortunately,I think, too long tolerated by the previous administration,” Miller told reporters on Monday.

Another Congressman Ed Markey expressed concern over the recent developments in Pakistan including release of A Q Khan and peace treaty in the Swat Valley. All of this,he said, reflects that the ‘US lacked a comprehensive strategy with respect to the region’ even after seven-and-half years.

Miller was briefing reporters on his last week’s trip to Afghanistan. The Congressional delegation was led by the House of Representative Speaker,Nancy Pelosi. Miller is Chairman of the House Education and Labour Committee.

“That must change if we’re going to sacrifice American lives and treasure in continuing this effort.”

“I think that active engagement and participation by neighbours in the region is absolutely critical going forward,” Miller added.

Pelosi in her remarks recollected the words of the Director National Intelligence (DNI). “In the words of the DNI Director Blair, when he testified before Congress earlier this month,he said no improvement in Afghanistan is possible without Pakistan taking control of its border areas and improving governance, creating economic and educational opportunities throughout the country.”

“Just in the last couple of weeks, the Pakistanis have released A Q Khan, the Johnny Appleseed of nuclear technology who spread it across the planet,” Markey said.

“In the Swat Valley in Pakistan, the Pakistani government has ceded control to the Taliban, which has indicated that it is imposing Shari’a on that valley, which is 80 miles north of Islamabad and near the Afghanistan border,” he said.

“So this is clearly something that needs to be now thought of in a strategic way,in a way that integrates all of these subjects,” he said.
