Whatmore and KKR part ways

The Kolkata Knight Riders announced that coach Dav Whatmore, who has been in-charge for the past two years, has resigned

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Sunday announced that coach Dav Whatmore, who has been in-charge for the past two years, has resigned, citing his inability to continue as he pursues a similar role with the Pakistan national side. However, insiders in KKR say that the team management was upset that Whatmore went ahead and applied for the Pakistan role without formally informing the IPL team.

“It wouldn’t be wrong to say that he was issued the pink slip,” a KKR source said. However, the official line was sightly different. “We have been most supportive of Dav’s interest in pursuing an international coaching role and wish him the very best. His decision to resign is to ensure that the KKR is able to plan for the transition and we thank him for that,” KKR CEO Venky Mysore said.

KKR is scheduled to hold a camp in Kolkata on January 15-16 and the team management didn’t want any confusion with regard to the future of their coach.

Whatmore replaced John Buchanan after IPL II. Before taking over as KKR coach Whatmore was chairman at the NCA. The KKR management, however,is tight-lipped about their new coach. “You will hear something by the end of this month,” team director Joy Bhattacharya said.

Meanwhile, the Cricket Association of Bengal has preferred to wait and watch. Whatmore also works as the director, development of junior cricket with the state association. CAB president Jagmohan Dalmiya told The Indian Express: “We don’t have too many replacements around. Let’s see what happens. We will wait for a few days (before taking a decision).”
