Stanislas Wawrinka and Xavier Malisse made sure they gave the Sunday crowd its money’s worth with a three-set final at the Chennai Open. Ultimately last year’s finalist Swiss Wawrinka prevailed 7-5 4-6 6-1.

For Wawrinka it was a happy ending of sorts. Going through personal problems,Wawrinka had decided not to take part but later when he changed his mind was given a wild card.

And it wasn’t easy for the Swiss. Wawrinka fought back against David Goffin and Robin Haase to advance. He played his best to overcome world No.6 and top seed Tomas Berdych in straight sets to reach the final, his first since Roger Federer’s former coach Peter Lundgren started coaching him. After Ivan Ljubicic in 2006,this is the first time a wildcard entrant has won the tournament.

Though Malisse broke Wawrinka’s serve in the first game of the match that went to deuce five times,Wawrinka came back on serve with a glorious backhand pass on break point in the eighth game to level 4-4. Wawrinka hit a backhand winner to take the set 7-5.

A single break of serve that Malisse earned in the third game sealed the second set (6-4) in favour of the Belgian.

The third was a one-sided affair,as Wawrinka won a couple of spectacular service games to love, and Malisse erred with the first serves. With two break of serves, and an overhead smash winner at championship point,Wawrinka scripted a dream win.
