Yet another champion from Chhatrasal

Hailing from Nahri village near Sonepat,Amit followed his village mates to Satpal’s training camp in the Capital eight years back

The FILA website ‘incorrectly’ states that Amit Kumar was born on June 1989. His Chhatrasal Stadium akhada gurus — Satpal,Ramphal,Yashvir and Virender — swear he is no older than 18. Either way,the Asian Olympic Qualifying gold he won on Friday was his first at senior level.

Christened ‘Bhura’ for his wheatish complexion,Amit has been a proven medal winner in all tournaments he has participated in. Before Friday’s feat,he had already bagged bronze at the Asian Wrestling Championship in Gumi,South Korea,on his maiden tournament with the senior team.

Hailing from Nahri village near Sonepat,Amit followed his village mates to Satpal’s training camp in the Capital eight years back. “There were several from his village. One of them got him to Chhtrasal. He,like others, has been training with us ever since,” Satpal said.

At the National Championships in Gonda last year,Amit upstaged 55kg regulars Rahul Aware and Vinod Kumar. Since then,he hasn’t looked back. “After his return from South Korea,he told me he now knows the world standard and was confident of winning the quota in Astana,” recalls Devinder.

From School Games to Jr Asian championship,Amit has won gold at every level and his proven record has propelled him to the senior team. “His record is exemplary. He would make everybody proud one day,” adds Satpal. — VP
