Pitting her brother and Amethi MP Rahul Gandhi against UP Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, Priyanka Gandhi has said if the latter has any knowledge of the history of politics in India then he should not try to write off the former by calling him a mere child.
“Mulayam will very soon get a real test of competing with my brother. The situation has reached the boiling point and now only Rahul Gandhi will win,” was her common refrain at many places on the second day of her five-day roadshow in the state.
Attacking the SP, the BSP and the BJP, she said at a public meeting in Gauriganj, “Those who practise divisive politics don’t have any concern for the society. Those who care for you will never do this. The Congress is a party with a difference.”
Reminding voters that the victory of Congress candidates in fact will be a victory of her brother, she said: “Whether you take the elections as final or semi-final, ultimately Rahulji will win.”
“You must remember that the issue is poverty and problems of the common man. It is not Mulayam Singh or Mayawati, who in fact ask for your vote in the name of caste and class without having any concern about your poverty. I know that caste or religion is not your priority because you are waiting for development,” she said.
Covering more than 150 km, shaking hands with supporters, asking their problems and receiving memorandums, she said the Central Government often found itself helpless when the state government halted the developmental schemes introduced from New Delhi.
“It sounds strange that I had asked you to vote for the Congress in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections in the name of development, but now I am saying that vote for my party in the Assembly for the sake of development. But what can I do when it is possible only when the Congress rules at the Centre as well as in the state?” she added.
