Close on the heels of Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s three-day visit to Amethi that concluded last night, daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is headed there in the first fortnight of June to give a kickstart to the party revamp in the constituency, beginning with its two lowest units — booth and block-level committees.

She is expected to supervise the constitution of booth-level committees by the UP Youth Congress. Each booth panel would be given a small area, with a limited voters’ list, to establish personal rapport with the electorate.

Party workers, mostly belonging to the Uttar

Pradesh Youth Congress, will also embark on a door-to-door campaign to propagate Congress ideals and to highlight failures of the BSP-BJP government. Sonia herself took to the streets of Amethi in her recent visit and holding over 30 corner meetings.

Priyanka, of course, remains the party’s surest bet. During her last trip, she had assured workers that she would visit them regularly and is believed to be considering Amethi as the testing ground for her strategies.

She may also begin the groundwork to bring the BJP’s Amethi candidate Sanjay Singh, who wields considerable clout in the region, back into the party fold.
