Five killed as truck dashes against tree
Five persons were killed while five others were injured when a truck in which they were travelling dashed against a tree near Gotundi village on Baramati-Indapur road this afternoon. The truck driver and its cleaner were among those killed in the mishap which occured at around 2.15 p.m.

The victims were identified as Mahadev alias Pandit Bhimappa Madgar (driver), resident of Indi village, Bijapur district, Koupya Tukaram Shinde (24), of Gotundi, Rajendra Tulshiram Dhas (19), Tajya Ganpat Kale. An unidentified woman was also killed in the mishap.

The cement-laden truck (MH-13 G1792) was going towards Baramati from Indapur. All the victims were seated in the driver’s cabin. The injured have been admitted to government hospitals at Bhigwan and Akluj. API Prakash Shah of Walchandnagar police station is investigating.

Award winning cop dies
A sub-inspector of Lonavala city police station, Sharad Jadhav (45), passed away in Pune following a cardiac arrest this morning.

A recipient of the President’s police medal for meritorious service, Jadhav had been deputed to Lonavla since March 1997. He has worked in Pune, Pune rural police, Solapur and at Regional Police Training School at Khandala. He was involved in various social activities. He developed the first traffic park in the State for children at Solapur to create awareness about traffic discipline. He also developed a children’s park at Lonavala and cultural hall at Dehu Road. At Kondhwa near Satara, he had set up a gymnasium. He was among the winners of University of Pune body building championship. Jadhav is survived by wife, two sons and a daughter.

New role for Takawale
Former Vice-Chancellor of University of Pune Dr. Ram Takawale recently has taken over as chief advisor of Srushti, a cultural organisation here, founder of the organisation Prashant Kothadia said.The advisory board of the organisation recently celebrated its sixth foundation day.
