Chakan farmer commits suicideA young farmer from neighbouring Chakan, recently arrested for brawling, committed suicide hours after he was released on bail on Wednesday. Sanjay Dattatray alias Surendra Deshmukh (31) hanged himself from a wireless tower located on the campus of the Chakan police station last night.None of the policemen present noticed Sanjay climbing the tower. The incident came to light only when some early risers noticed Sanjay's body hanging from the tower around 5.30 a.m.The reasons for the suicide could not be ascertained as Sanjay did not leave any note. His body was handed over to relatives after a post mortem at the government hospital in Chakan. Sub Inspector Vijaysingh Gaikwad, in-charge of Chakan police station, suspected Sanjay may have taken the drastic step because of ill health. He had been ill for the last year. He and his relatives suspected he was HIV infected.Moreover, he was also involved in a dispute with relatives over ownership of some agricultural land, Gaikwad said. He added that Sanjay was recently arrested on the basis of a complaint of brawling against him. The young farmer was released on bail on Wednesday afternoon, he added. Meanwhile, the Chakan police have filed a case of accidental death in this connection.Traffic held upVehicular traffic on the busy Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Road was disrupted for over an hour due to a minor mishap involving an Army truck and a car. The accident which took place on Thursday afternoon. Nobody was injured. The Army truck, on its way to the National Defence Academy (NDA) Khadakwasla brushed aside the car around 12.30 p.m, according to traffic police officials.Traffic was held up for nearly an hour as the drivers of both vehicles refused to shift the vehicles. An argument ensued on whether military authorities should be summoned to inspect the damage. Later, the Bund Garden police streamlined the traffic with the help of some traffic cops.Properties seizedProperties of five industrial units in Pimpri-Chinchwad have been seized by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) in its drive to recover property tax from the defaulters.Assistant commissioner and head of the tax collection department Anil Bhavsar said a total of 74 industrial units owed the corporation a sum of Rs 6.9 crore. The units did not pay the property tax despite repeated notices served to them.
